After a Fashion Jen Turano 9780764212758 Books

Jen Turano has done it again. I had read other books by this author and was equally entertained by After a Fashion. It's well written, funny, romantic and a little suspenseful. I love that her writing is a little unpredictable. What a fun read.

I received this book from Bethany Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

After a Fashion Jen Turano 9780764212758 Books Reviews

This book is historical fiction at its best. The author makes you
feel as if you are right there beside the characters in the 1882.
It was interesting learning about the millinery shop workings,
refashioning gowns, the theatre, business ventures, the place of
woman and daily lives of the rich, working class and poor.
The characters are artfully drawn and well developed. The
chemistry between the main characters was undeniable. There
were time when I had to laugh out loud at some of their
shenanigans. The supporting characters were all colorful…each
in their own way adding much flavor to the story. I loved the
male main character, Oliver Addleshaw’s dog, Buford. He made
for a very entertaining read.
Harriet Peabody, a millinery shop girl, is sent on an errand to
deliver hats to Oliver Addleshaw’s home for his supposed
fiancée. Harriet never imagined how wrong things would turn
out on this errand. But Oliver feels responsible for her plight.
He offers her a solution to his problems and to her newly
unemployed status.
But will things be as smooth and successful as Oliver thinks???
Mix historical fiction, a real live fairytale, humor, social issue
and romance for a good read.
Thank you to book fun.org for this Book. My opinion is my own.
This book was an enjoyable, light read. It had plenty of banter and a heroine who wasn't afraid to share her opinions. My favorite thing about the book was that although the two main characters in the book brought out the worst in each other at times, they also brought out the best in each other. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
"After a Fashion" by Jen Turano is the first of the series, "A Class of Their Own". After Ms. Turano's first series, "Ladies of Distinction" (several of whom I've reviewed), I was looking forward to diving into After a Fashion. I won't go into details about her first series (which each book can be a standalone book). With After a Fashion, we encounter Miss Harriet Peabody. What a name?! The name itself gives me a smile. Through comedic circumstances, Harriet and one of the wealthiest man in town, Mr. Oliver Addleshaw comes together to put on a show for the elite and tongue-wagging society of New York City.

If you know Ms. Turano's works, you know she brings a sense of humor to her novels. The imagery of how vivid a scenario in her books just makes you laugh out loud. That is the case with Harriet's and Oliver's very first encounter. With a mentally unstable "lady", a shocked gentleman (Oliver) and a no-nonsense hat girl (Harriet), the first meeting was one of chaos and delightful dialogue. How does the author come up with this stuff?!!

The rest of the plot was intriguing and full of fun and also chaotic personalities and scenes, it just keeps you reading and reading until you realize it was the end. Ms. Turano builds her characters with the use of other supporting characters, which gives you a sense of fullness when it comes to her characters' development. The various twists in the storyline also gives you a strong picture of what After a Fashion is about and will elude to. Give this one a read. Just look at the vivacious colors of her cover, you will see how "fashionable" After a Fashion is and will continue to be.

NOTE I won a copy of this book through a sweepstakes. A review was not mandatory.
I may eventually read the rest but I am at the three-quarter mark and they are still bickering. I'm so tired of it.
The Good Overall this was a sort of cute story. It was very clean. The author certainly understands how to write witty conversation and there are certain discussions that I thought were kind of funny.

The Bad Quite frankly this book was disjointed and the dialogue is confusing. The characters spend so much time talking around a subject that I forget what they were trying to say. The are continually interrupting eachother or changing topics. When they do talk for long periods of time they all have extremely vast vocabularies that they utilize in order to go on and on and on.
The dialogue was jumpy and so was the plot. Here is, in general how most of the book went guy does something to offend girl she gets angry and storms off, Guy tracks girl down, they argue/discuss in a long-winded fashion, they decide to continue their agreement, immediately after guy does something to annoy girl, she storms off/ gets angry, they discuss AGAIN in a long-winded fashion.... and you get the point. There were a few sort of humerous accidents sprinkled in there, but that was generally what happened. By the time I had made it half way through the book I wanted to grab the heroine and shake her and say stop being an idiot and just talk to the guy! And I wanted to shake the hero and tell him to stop being such a clueless snob.
My final issue with this story is the lack of chemistry between the main characters or, for that matter of a relationship in general. There were a couple times the hero just couldn't look away from her lips. There was one hug. The hero was twice struck by the heroine's beauty. On the heroine's part she felt affection for him and a couple times her friends talk about her being attracted to him. But there was no evidence of this! It just felt like they were so busy talking around eachother they forgot to give any evidence that they were falling in love (if they even really were). After a slightly unbelievable plot twist at the end they do decide to get married. But again, I felt nothing for either character and honestly didn't care if they got together or not.

In Summary This book was cute and had funny moments. It is harmless Christian historical chick lit. If you have already read and enjoyed this author then go ahead and buy it. If you are wondering whether or not to purchase the book and have NOT read anything by this author my suggestion is to avoid this book. It's not worth the time or money.
